Paolo Emilio Selva
Head of Software Engineering
Weta Digital
New Zealand
As Head of Software Engineering, Paolo is a driving force behind the ever-evolving technology and innovation at Weta Digital.
Weta Digital has a large research department tasked with delivering cutting edge technology to the artists that work there.
Since joining Weta in 2008, Paolo has been instrumental in the development of many of Weta’s key technologies. His favorite accomplishment is the development of TopoCloud (a set of specific tools used to create solutions in one of Weta’s ray-tracing systems PantaRay). Paolo’s solutions enabled high-performance computing that greatly optimised the delivery of large, complex shows like The Adventures of Tintin, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, The Jungle Book and The BFG.
Paolo and his team delivered new tools for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, which enabled artists to create high-resolution geometry for the fractal-spires inside planet Ego, and to dress large environments.
He and his team also improved their plant growth tool Lumberjack for War for the Planet of the Apes by implementing Totara – a tool that procedurally grows entire naturalistic forests by adhering to the same growth principles found in nature.
