animago AWARD & CONFERENCE 2017
Senior Lighter Matthias Menz will share his journey through the art of digital lighting at Weta Digital.
Since the pioneering work that brought us Gollum 15 years ago, Weta Digital has continued to develop the art of digital lighting through major advancements in rendering technology, and by harnessing the inherent storytelling potential of a carefully lit scene.
Matthias will show how the works of classic cinematographers and master painters like Rembrandt, Monet and Degas have shaped his approach to cinematic lighting in the digital age. He will also delve into the deeper creative considerations by Weta artists in their pursuit of merging realism with cinematic artistry. He will focus on examples from some of Weta Digital’s most memorable worlds – including James Cameron’s “Avatar”; Steven Spielberg’s “The Adventures of Tintin” and more recently, “The BFG” and Matt Reeves’ “Planet of the Apes” films.
